To cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Primero Transport Services Limited, Fola Tinubu, has called on the government to ensure fair pricing for public transport and affordability of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for the masses.
Tinubu, while responding to a question on why his company did not increase fares, said the company does not use Premium Motor Spirits (PMS), hence the fare prices have not changed.
According to him, there are three components of any public transportation system, which are affordability, efficiency and safety.
He said: “If you don’t make your public transportation affordable, then it is public transport. So you have to make it affordable and the affordability part of it is what you just referred to.
“Everybody is jerking up their prices now but the organised public transport sector cannot be increasing prices at will, or on a daily basis like everyone else. That is why the government has to come in. That is why like I always say, we need to sit down and develop a business model that works for the government, the operators and the masses,” he said.
Besides, as compared to the cost of regular transportation around the metropolis, the operator rates are definitely the most affordable in Lagos for mass public transportation.
