As the New Media Conference (NMC) prepares for its 10th anniversary celebration, the organisers have said that they will storm three major cities in Africa: Lagos, Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; and Accra, Ghana.
According to Oluwatosin Ajibade, the founder of Olori Super Gal (OSG) Media promoters of the conference, NMC has been a driving force in sparking conversations, nurturing the next generation of media professionals, and championing new causes since its inception in 2015.
With this year’s theme as “The Decade of Disruptors,” Ajibade said: “This is the 10th anniversary; we started on May 27, 2015 at the Terra Kulture. The idea came to me at a car park and since then, we have continued to host a yearly conference. We created this conference to expand our conversation on the industry.
“We have done 12 editions in the last 10 years. So far, we have had great conversations and great speakers such as Fela Durotoye, Chude Jideonwo, MI Abaga, Stephanie Busari and others. We have had workshops, masterclasses. This is an event that creates impacts and also creates jobs in the industry.”
On what she’s doing differently for the 10th year, Ajibade further said: “We are doing something different by hosting this year’s event in three cities. We are going back to Nairobi for the second time. And of course, we’re also having it in Lagos.
“And one thing again is that if you look at the new media space, it’s not all just about the experts, the stakeholders, the agencies, media people, the tech, bloggers or creators. It also involves school students.”
One of the impacts so far using the new media platform is going to secondary schools, hosting school debates, and also informing them about the use of the new media. “We started the school debate in 2017 and that has also helped us to go from one school to the other. In 2024 we gave the winners money to invest in their ICT department in their schools.”
“The new media conference, Lagos edition is coming up on September 27, 2025, then Nairobi in October, and November for Accra. We are also having the school debate in October,” Ajibade
enthused.
