TALP X sparks fire for bold African narratives in September edition

A wave of excitement filled the Terra Kulture in Victoria Island, Lagos, as guests flocked to catch the latest edition of TAFTA Action Learning Programme X (TALP X) hosted by the Terra Academy for the Arts (TAFTA).

Held on Saturday, September 20, attendees were treated to an afternoon brimming with uplifting storytelling and audacious performances. The quarterly event once again showcased why it ranks among Nigeria’s most eagerly awaited creative exhibitions, leaving the audience inspired and craving more.

From the opening to the closing, the stage buzzed with two captivating productions performed by TAFTA participants, seamlessly merging theatre, comedy, and music. Each performance reinforced TALP X’s mission as a platform that transforms classroom learning into real-world stage experiences.

The lineup featured two original plays: Kingmaker, a daring and emotionally resonant tale of an enslaved girl’s battle against patriarchal constraints as she vies for her role as a kingmaker, and Bookcover, a witty and poignant story of an elite family confronting their own prejudices, offering a reminder that human worth extends beyond superficial labels.

Reflecting on the performances, seasoned theatre practitioner, creative director, and arts consultant, Dr. Afeez Oyetoro, lauded the storytelling artistry and depth of the performances.

Bolanle Austen-Peters, Founder and CEO of TAFTA, shared her immense pride in the participants: “I am so proud of what our trainees are doing. TALP is giving them the opportunity to practically showcase what they have been studying. My vision is to expand TALP beyond Lagos into other cities, so more young creatives can share their voices and talents with the world.”

For Mr. Joseph Umoibom, Academy Lead at TAFTA: “TALP represents the culmination of our training approach. From rehearsals to the main stage, our participants are not only learning but also practicing at the highest level. This stage is where their hard work comes alive.”

Produced in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, TALP X continues to uphold TAFTA’s mission of equipping young Nigerians with top-notch creative skills and opportunities to shine. The September edition proved to be another outstanding success and a bold testament that the future of African storytelling is vibrant, fearless, and unyielding.
