• Enugu APC condemns killing, abduction of party officials
• As police vow to arrest masterminds of attacks
A group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (InterSociety), yesterday, said security agents and herdsmen killed no fewer than 1, 150 residents in the South East region between October 2020 and December 2021.
The group also said about 1, 000 persons were lost, saying that they were abducted by the security agents in the region.
A statement issued by Emeka Umeagbalasi alleged that three governors in the zone were culpable in the entire incident, adding: “The Nigerian security forces deployed in Eastern Nigeria had in 14 months between October 2020 and December 2021 killed at least 1,150 Easterners.
“The killings represent a monthly average of 85 deaths and daily average of three and could be monthly average of 155 and daily average of 5.5 deaths, if the presumed dead 1, 000 missing citizens were added.
“The security forces also abducted and caused to disappeare till date in the same past 14 months at least 1, 000 unarmed civilians; arrested alive and unarmed and taken into security custody outside the knowledge of their families or lawyers, from where they have gone missing till date,” the statement reads.
BESIDES, the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned gunmen attack, which led to the death of two chieftains of the party in Enugu South Council of the state on Tuesday.
The gunmen had invaded a meeting of the party in Ward 2, killing two persons including the youth leader, Kelvin Ezeoha, abducted another party chieftain, Monday Ogbonna and injured several others.
The party, which is in the process of reconciling internal differences, described the incident as wicked and crude.
Reacting to the incident, yesterday, newly elected chairman of the party, Adolphus C. Ude, urged the police to ensure that those who perpetrated the dastardly act were arrested and prosecuted.
He described the carnage on members of the party as “atrocious, unbelievable, profane and horrendous,” as Enugu was not known for such barbarity.
MEANWHILE, the Enugu state Commissioner of Police (CP), Abubakar Lawal, yesterday, visited scene of the incident and vowed to arrest those behind the dastardly act.
Lawal, who lamented the incident, visited the scene and the injured victims at the hospital and ordered immediate investigation and rescue of Ogbonna,alleged to have been abducted to an unknown destination during the invasion.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ndukwe, quoted Lawal, as saying that he would leave “no stone unturned to fish out the perpetrators of the crime.”
