Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the rescue of seven members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) abducted on Saturday by suspected kidnappers.

They were rescued unhurt by combined efforts of the police, Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps also known as So-Safe Corps, and others.

Both spokesperson for the Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Omolola Odutola, and Director of Information and Public Relations of the So-Safe Corps, Assistant Commander Moruf Yusuf, yesterday, confirmed the development in separate statements.

Odutola stated that one pastor Adesina Oyesegun of RCCG, Omun Pepe village, had on Saturday at about 4:30a.m. reported to the police station that at about 3:30a.m., he was in church with other pastors and church members, when some hoodlums numbering about seven invaded their church, attacked them with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons with intent to kidnap members.

According to her, Oyesegun narrated that the hoodlums were shooting sporadically, as a result, 56-year-old pastor, Kayode Oluwakemi, sustained bullet wounds on his chest and unfortunately died on the spot.

“The villagers and security men in the area attracted the neighbouring villagers and security men that confronted the suspected kidnappers in a gun duel.

“The kidnapped victims have regained their freedom.

“Some of the suspected kidnappers escaped with bullet wounds, one yet-to-be identified suspected kidnapper was neutralised, while combing the bush, and his remains deposited at Owode Egba General Hospital Morgue,” she added.

The PPRO added that efforts were in progress to arrest the other fleeing suspects that were still at large.
