‘Slow personal development impeding information managers’ efficiency’

Experts have attributed slow self-development as responsible for inefficiency of some information managers and office administrators.

The experts, who spoke at the conference of the National Institute of Office Administrators and Information Managers (NIOAIM) conference, said efficient information management was critical to the survival of any organisation in the present time, especially schools.

The conference had “Repositioning office administrators and information management for innovation, sustainable development and global competitiveness” as a theme.

The experts are the Head, Department of Counselling and Human Developmental Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof  Oyesoji Aremu; Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Remi Adeyemo; the  President of the National Institute of Office Administrator and Information Managers, Dr Tolulope Adenekan and others.

On his part, the Head, Department of Counselling and Human Developmental Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof. Aremu, identified a lack of personal development for the inefficiency of some information managers and office administrators.

Aremu, who delivered the lead paper at the maiden conference, faulted the use of official information for personal interests.

He said that the 21st Century administrators and information managers needed to be up-skilled continuously to remain relevant and efficient in discharging their duties.

He said now that technology had started taking over jobs hitherto meant for humans, everybody that wanted to be relevant in their fields now should develop themselves and make themselves relevant wherever they are.

He said: “Organisation needs to embrace technology to remain in business. Technology has become a sine qua non of modern professional emancipation owing to its enormous contribution to alleviating human sufferings occasioned by analogue practices.

“Across varied contexts, technology has been referred to as “saviour” owing to the roles it plays in facilitating simplicity, easiness and speed in human activities. The dichotomy often witnessed between developed and developing nations, advanced and struggling economies is motivated by technology.

“For office administrators and information managers to be part of e-Tech in the 21” century, they have to seamlessly integrate into it and avail themselves of continuing education and training, which a conference like this gives.”

Also, the Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof Adeyemo, said efficient information management was critical to the survival of any organisation in the present time especially schools.

Information management strategies influence the relationships of information, technology, and the larger society.
