Kano State has recorded a historic leap to 4th position in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking, marking one of the most remarkable improvements in the country’s climate governance history.
The state’s unprecedented rise, from 35th place last year to the top five, reflects the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has made environmental sustainability and climate resilience a central pillar of its development agenda.
Under Governor Yusuf’s leadership, Kano has implemented far-reaching reforms and initiatives aimed at protecting the environment, promoting renewable energy, and strengthening climate adaptation. These include the Kano State Climate Change Policy, renewable energy deployment in public institutions, urban greening and beautification projects under the Urban Renewal Programme, as well as large-scale afforestation and erosion control interventions.
Representing the Governor at the official unveiling of the 2025 ranking in Abuja, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Hashim, said the recognition underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and sound environmental management.
At the event, Samantha Harrison, First Secretary, Climate Diplomacy, British High Commission, Abuja, presented the certificate of recognition to the Kano State Government in acknowledgement of its exceptional progress in climate governance.
Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Department of Climate Change for their continuous partnership in strengthening subnational climate governance.
He also commended the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) and the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, for initiating and managing the national climate governance ranking, alongside the UK-FCDO Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) and other development partners for their steadfast support.
Governor Yusuf dedicated the milestone to the Government and people of Kano State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient future for all.
