Lagos is set to become the centre of African badminton next year as the 2025 Lagos International Badminton Classic is scheduled to take place from August 27–30 at the Teslim Balogun Indoor Sports Hall in Surulere.
The event, confirmed by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) in partnership with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is expected to draw top players from around the world.
“Hosting the Classic is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s sports calendar,” BFN President Francis Orbih said.
“It enhances global exposure for Nigerian athletes while cementing Lagos as a hub for badminton in Africa.”
The tournament, now one of the continent’s leading badminton events, is sanctioned by the BWF and offers participants crucial ranking points for the World Championships and Olympic Games.
Over 200 athletes from 31 countries, including India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, are expected to compete.
Teams from the U.S., Canada, France, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will also participate, highlighting the event’s growing international appeal.
Organisers have emphasised the championship’s role in youth engagement, sports development, and raising Nigeria’s profile on the global badminton stage.
The event is supported by the BWF, the Badminton Confederation of Africa, the Lagos State Government, and corporate sponsors.
Fans can look forward to four days of high-speed matches. Entry will be free, with games also streamed live on the federation’s social media platforms, providing wider access to audiences across the globe.
Orbih added that the Classic represents more than competition; it is an opportunity to inspire young athletes and showcase the nation’s ability to host international sporting events.
“Our goal is not just to stage a tournament, but to grow the sport, nurture talent, and show that Nigeria can lead in badminton globally,” he said.
