Alex Iwobi makes history as Arsenal beat Fulham

Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi reached a unique milestone on Saturday, becoming the first player to feature in 100 Premier League matches for both Arsenal and Fulham, even as his current side fell 0-1 at the Emirates Stadium to his former club.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who progressed through Arsenal’s academy before spells at Everton and Fulham, marked the occasion in front of supporters who acknowledged his professionalism and work rate despite Fulham’s defeat.

Iwobi’s achievement highlights his consistency and longevity in England’s top flight, spanning nearly a decade, and reinforces his status as a key figure for Nigeria’s national team.

Arsenal, managed by Spaniard Mikel Arteta, secured the victory through a 58th-minute finish from Leandro Trossard, marking their first win in three visits to Fulham and their fifth successive victory across all competitions.

“The recent history wasn’t in our favour and we wanted to change that, like we did against Newcastle and West Ham at home,” Arteta explained. “This is another step to having that mindset and that ability to win these kinds of matches against a really good opposition, and a really difficult place to come.”

The Gunners demonstrated patience and maturity to break down a stubborn Fulham defence, while VAR overturned a potential penalty for Bukayo Saka after a lengthy review. Arteta admitted frustration with the duration of the review but accepted the final decision, adding support for Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres despite his continued Premier League scoring drought.

Although Fulham were unable to secure a result, Iwobi’s performance drew praise, reflecting his enduring influence on the pitch and the personal significance of the milestone he achieved against the club where he began his professional journey.
