Football legends to honour Warri monarch with novelty game

Some of the biggest names in Nigerian football are set to participate in the fourth anniversary of the Olu of Warri’s coronation in what looks like a fusion of sports, culture and royal tradition.

The ex-footballers will feature in a novelty match on August 19, 2025, as part of the ceremonies.

The match coordinator, Prince Godstime Emiko, said the event promises to be a thrilling celebration of the monarch and his unwavering support for football.

Headlining the spectacle are football royalty, including Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba.

Also listed for the match are Emmanuel Amunike, Austin Eguavoen, Taribo West, Mutiu Adepoju, Ifeanyi Udeze, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, Garba Lawal, Yakubu Ayegbeni and Peterside Idah.

Emiko said: “These icons will lead a nostalgic yet competitive nine-a-side faceoff between Chevron All Stars of Warri and Iwere All Stars, turning the Palace of the Olu of Warri into a temple of football theatre.”

Describing the event as more than just a game, the organisers said: “It’s a celebration of unity, heritage, and the Olu’s commitment to nurturing football and youth development in Warri.”
