Over 120 young players participate in FIFA talent scheme
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has concluded a two-week training programme in Abuja for the National U15 Boys, also known as the Future Eagles, as part of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS).
The initiative, aimed at fostering long-term talent development, saw over 120 young players showcase their skills in line with FIFA’s global vision for improving national-team football.
Head of the TDS delegation in Nigeria and a former Nigeria international, Mr. Nasiru Jibril, noted the significance of the programme, saying: “The Talent Development Scheme is a project initiated by FIFA to benefit countries like Nigeria.
“We are giving every child between the ages of 12 and 15 the opportunity to display their talents. Players from these age groups are being assessed so we can select the best and build a group that will supply talent to our national teams.”
He stressed that the programme aims to prepare young players for future international competitions.
He said, “From 2025, the U17 AFCON will become an annual event. Without initiatives like this, countries may struggle to assemble their best players. This programme will ensure a steady supply of talent for our senior national teams in the near future.”
Coach Patrick Bassey, Head Coach of Nigeria’s U15 team, praised the transparent recruitment process.
“In the selection of players, merit has been the key factor,” Bassey said. “Every player scouted and brought here possesses talent, skill, and commitment. I believe these players will be valuable to the nation in the long run.”
A total of 120 players, divided into two batches, were invited for the first phase of the program.
According to Coach Bassey, 40 players will be selected for another schedule before the year ends, as part of the ongoing talent development effort.
