The family of late Nigerian football legend, Prince Peter Rufai, has announced the funeral arrangements of the former Super Eagles goalkeeper.
A statement signed by Sunny Bruce Rufai on behalf of the family on Monday, Service of Songs and public presentation of his biography will be held on Thursday, August 21st, at Raji Rasaki Estate Field, off Raji Rasaki Road, Amuwo Odofin, at 4:30 pm prompt.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, at 22nd of August, 2025, at the Catholic Church of Visitation, First Avenue, Festac Town, at 10:00 am, while interment follows immediately at Ikoyi Cemetery. Thanksgiving Service will be held at the Catholic Church of Visitation, Lagos, at 8:00 am.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper, fondly known as “Dodo Mayana, ” passed away at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, after a brief illness. He was aged 61.
Rufai began his football career with Sharks Football Club in Port Harcourt in the late 1970s, eventually becoming Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goalkeeper, participating in the 1994 and 1998 tournaments.
Rufai played a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON victory in Tunisia ’94 and earned 66 caps for the national team, famously scoring a rare goal as a goalkeeper., His professional career spanned clubs in Benin Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, establishing him as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
After retirement, he founded Staruf Sports Development Limited in Nigeria, focusing on grassroots sports and youth development until his passing.
