The seventh edition of the Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays will be held on November 22, 2025 on the school’s tartan tracks, the organisers have said.
Speaking on plans for the 2025 GCU Relays, yesterday, President General, Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, said that the event, which has been held annually for the last eight years, is set to attract the best student/athletes from heritage schools across the country.
“In spite of all odds and the funding challenges, we still must prosecute the GCU Relays on a yearly basis,” he said, adding that one of the objectives of the event is the utilisation of the tartan tracks facilities constructed and donated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), as a vehicle to effectively promote the GCU Relays yearly.
GCU Relays Ambassador, Ruks Bazunu said: “While the maintenance warranty by Shell may have expired, the wear and tear occasioned by the vagaries of inclement weather has ensured that we need urgent remedial works to be extended to the tracks.
“We do not want this Shell gesture to be a Greek Gift, hence the clarion call to Corporate Nigeria, Shell inclusive, to come to the school’s aid at effecting a near complete re-laying of the Tartan Tracks.”
