SSANU, NASU declare seven days warning strike

NASU protest

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have declared a seven-day warning strike.

The planned strike is to demand payment of four months’ worth of salary that have been withheld from their members since the 2022 nationwide strike.

SSANU president, Mohammed Ibrahim, in a communiqué on Monday, said the decision to embark on the warning strike was agreed as a last resort, since several protest letters and other communications with the Federal Government did not lead to the payment of the withheld salaries.

The latest move comes on the back of the unions accusing the government of treating their members with “disdain.”

President Bola Tinubu had directed the payment of salaries that were previously withheld from university workers due to their strike in 2022.

SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), however, stated that they were yet to get salaries for the said period.

They went on to issue a one-week ultimatum about two weeks ago.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ibrahim alleged abandonment of the unions by the government.

“We have to speak like this because we have been clearly shown that we do not matter in the system.

“But we all know that there is no university that can function without the non-teaching staff because we are majorly populated by professionals.”

He said the unions own the engine of the administration of every university; unfortunately, this segment of staff is treated with some disdain.
