Stakeholders have stressed the need for action to intensify efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic following the disturbing number of COVID-19 deaths globally.
Vice Chancellor of the Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, at the weekend, said the university had concluded plans to digitise Medical Laboratory Science in the institution following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
He stated this at the institution’s 11th Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) induction and oath-taking ceremony of the 58 newly qualified graduates of Medical Laboratory Science in Okada, Edo State.
Registrar and Secretary General, West Africa Post-Graduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS), Dr. Godswill Okara, lamented rising cases and deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic.
He stressed that the development underscored the magnitude of the health crisis in the world and the importance of medical laboratory testing and scientists in the quest to contain the deadly virus.
Okara said the provision of efficient, affordable and sustainable laboratory services would improve healthcare delivery and lead to the reduction of the menace of communicable and non-communicable diseases not only in Africa but globally.
He explained that the COVID-19 pandemic had exposed and shaped medical laboratory science profession to be the major source of cure in healthcare.
On his part, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of MLSCN, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, commended founder of IUO, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and management of the institution for promoting academic excellence in Nigeria.
