Streaming gets new Showmax app

The new Showmax app has been unveiled with the goal of changing the game for streaming in Africa.


The new app is coming ten months after MultiChoice, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky announced a joint streaming vision for Africa. The new Showmax app is a refreshed brand and a massive content lineup, all delivered on a powerful new streaming platform.
At the heart of the new offering is the world’s first standalone Premier League plan for mobile, with all 380 games offered live on Showmax Premier League for just N2,900 a month.

In addition, there are two more Showmax plans available to customers: Showmax Entertainment on mobile for N1,200 a month, as well as the Showmax Entertainment plan priced at N2,500 per month at launch.

Speaking at the unveiling, the General Manager, Showmax Nigeria, Opeoluwa Filani, said: “There are currently just over 450 million smart phones in the hands of individuals across Africa and more than 250 million avid football lovers on the continent.

“Showmax Premier League is a game-changing product that gives individuals a ticket to the football they love, wherever they are, on the device they always have with them, at a price that’s impossible not to love.”

He added that customer is at the heart of what his company does and the new showmax is for everyone. He identified competitive pricing, easy to use, and affordable cutting edge the showmax has over competitive products. He disclosed that plans are on to partner with telcos for cheaper bundle to stream on the platform.

On her part, Head of Marketing, Showmax, Arinola Shobande, said that with the new app, it is a new era and, language of entertainment. She added that the product was specifically built to Nigerians and by extension Africans.

According to her, in coming up with the new Showmax app, feedbacks were got from across Africa to develop an excellent product for super experience for the average consumers. “Whatever you say you want, we would give it to you. And we would continue to improve on the offering,” Shobande said.

The Executive Head, Content and West Africa Channels, MultiChoice, Dr Busola Tejumola, said that 21 titles across Africa would be launched on the new Showmax app in February, with five specifically for the Nigerian market She said that the new Showmax app is being re-launched in 44 countries and take off officially on January 23.

“Nobody understands Africa like we do. Showmax is putting the continent first with a powerful streaming service that will revolutionise streaming in Africa in 2024,” John Ugbe, CEO of West Africa, MultiChoice said.

The new Showmax app will become available in app stores from January 23, 2024.
