Student commits suicide in Ogun over alleged failed accreditation

A 300-Level nursing student of the College of Science, Business and Management Studies in Abeokuta, identified as Ajoke, has reportedly taken her life.

Ajoke’s lifeless body was discovered in her off-campus hostel room. The deceased, believed to be pregnant, was said to have ingested a poisonous substance, resulting in her demise.

The tragic incident has thrown the college community into mourning, even as the state government swiftly shut down the institution. The Guardian learnt that the incident might not be unconnected with closure of the institution by the Ogun State Ministry of Health, which accused it of offering a degree programme in Nursing Sciences for six years without accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

Investigations revealed that the deceased’s mental and emotional state had deteriorated, following failure of the college to meet NMCN’s accreditation requirements.

Ajoke had spent three years studying Basic Medical Science, before learning that the institution could not secure an accreditation for the programme.

A colleague of the deceased, who did not wish to be named, said: “For more than four months, she had been depressed because the course she was studying was not accredited. She thinks a lot and complains. She claimed that her parents used all the money they had to send her to the school.

“The situation took a tragic turn when Ajoke discovered that she was pregnant, exacerbating her distress. The realisation that she might not even receive a certificate for the years spent pursuing her education compounded her anguish.”
