Adoration (34)

We can appropriate his blessings when we seek him (34:4,10), cry out to him (34:6,17), trust him (34:8), fear him (34:7,9,11), refrain from lying (34:13), turn from evil, do good and seek peace (34:14), are humble (34:18), and serve him (34:22).

“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.” (Ps 34:7)

“The angel of the Lord encamps around.” The angel of the Lord probably refers to the angelic host of heaven; they are “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation,” (Heb 1:14; cf. Gen 32:1-2; 2 King 6:17). God has appointed His angels to protect and rescue His saints from physical and spiritual harm. This promise of divine intervention is reserved only for those who truly fear God (see next note).

“Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him,” (Ps 34:9).
“There is no want to those who fear him.” Note that the promises in this psalm are conditional, reserved only for those who genuinely fear the Lord. God promises to deliver us from fear (v.4), save us from trouble (vv.6,17), send angles to encamp around us (v.7), God promises to supply our needs (v.9), give us abundant life (v.12), hear our prayers (v.15), comfort us with His presence (v. 18), and redeem our souls (v.22) — but only if we seek the Lord (vv.4,10), cry out to Him (v.6), draw close to Him, fear Him (vv.7,9), keep our tongues from the evil world (v.14), do good and pursue peace (v.14), have contrite hearts (v. 18), and become His servants (v.22).

Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because men do not keep Your law.” (Ps 119:136)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction,” (Prov 1:7).“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,” (Prov 9:10).“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all,” (Ecc 12:13).“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding,” (Job 28:28).“Especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me: ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children,” (Deut 4:10).“Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name. 12: I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forevermore,” (Pss 86:11-12)
