National President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Dr. Kayode Oluwamotemi, yesterday, tasked the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on adequate provision of funds to address nation’s infrastructural challenges.

He made the call during a commiseration visit to office of Acting Surveyor-General of Lagos State, Ayokunnu Adesina, where he sympathised with him over burnt parts of his office building in Ikeja.

He stressed that proper investment on infrastructure was needed to sustain the surveying profession.

The NIS boss also called for enactment of adequate policies to address construction failure in the country.

Oluwamotemi while speaking with The Guardian shortly after the inspection of the building structure, said it is imperative for useful policies to be promulgated that would help in checkmating high buildings with substandard materials across the nation to avert building collapse.

The NIS President, who noted the importance of Lagos State chapter of the institution stressed that it was the reason the national body left Abuja to commiserate with surveyors in the state over the fire incident ordeal that affected some parts of their office structures last week.

“We thank God that no life was lost in the process. Just like every other profession and organisations, we are faced with the challenges of funds paucity and inadequate policies from the government meant to improve and sustain the profession to a greater height across the federation.

“We are calling on the federal and state governments to be partners in progress by providing laws and policies that would positively incorporate the activities of the surveying profession nationwide.

“Useful policies that will enable the monitoring of some basic infrastructures, such as high building structures, dams and bridges like the Eko, Third Mainland bridges and others should be promulgated to avert future damages,” he said.

He, however, advised individuals to report any surveying practitioner found to indulge in provision of fake plans and information to the nearest institute for immediate sanctions.

He added that discipline is an ethical principle that should be upheld always by all surveying practitioners both private and government to foster progress and development of the profession.

Responding, the Acting Surveyor-General of Lagos State, Ayokunnu Adesina, thanked the national body for the visit and promised to work with them to improve the surveying profession.
