Taiwan has expressed interest to deepen trade relations with Nigeria as the countries are mutually beneficial partners.
This was at the first ever Taiwan Business Forum and Exhibition in Nigeria held in Lagos.
Chief of Mission, Taiwan Government in Nigeria, Andy Liu, noted that Taiwan imports good quality Agricultural products from Nigeria, such as sesame and chestnut seeds, which they transform to oil and export to China.
He explained that the people of Taiwan have suffered various forms of counterfeit and piracy and as a solution, they have deployed delegates around the world to prove that they are victims of piracy and showcase product authenticity.
He emphasised that Taiwan, a country with almost the same population as Lagos, with its only natural resource as its brain power, focuses on investments in education.
He said with their focus on education, Illiteracy rate in the country is now less than two per cent and students from grade one to 12 enjoy free education.
Stating that the country prioritises investment in agriculture, technology, research and development, which is evident in its results, he added that America has acknowledged that 92 per cent of its industry, including military, depends on its microchip.
According to him, Taiwanese do only fair and legitimate trade.
They don’t steal nation’s resources or engage in illegal mining, but buy with a fair market price.
This led to Director General, World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, saying that Taiwan is one of the highest trade models in the world.
Director, Taiwan Trade Centre, Lagos, Cris Lin, said the forum aimed at promoting trade between Nigeria and Taiwan and creating awareness of Taiwan product quality to Nigeria and what they can offer to improve the nation’s life.
Director General (DG), Nigeria Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Sola Obadimu, said that Taiwan engages in ethical business and the quality of their products are guaranteed.
