As part of efforts aimed at creating safer and resilient online space, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has developed a comprehensive cybersecurity framework that will bridge gaps. The framework is supported by the World Bank group.
Speaking at a cybersecurity framework development regulatory meeting in Lagos, yesterday, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services at NCC, Abraham Oshadami, said the growing dependence on digital platforms, exponential increase in data traffic and evolving cyber threat landscape requires, “we take decisive action to ensure everyone is well protected.”
Saying the communications sector serves as the backbone of the nation’s economy and plays a vital role in economic transformation, he observed the industry has become a target for cybercriminals.
To him, “it is in recognition of the growing cyber security challenges that made NCC initiate the framework to serve as a guide for industry practice. We need all hands to be on deck. We are establishing an open channel for continuous collaboration from the development process to implementation. We are committed to building a secure and trusted communication ecosystem in Nigeria. We are fostering collaborations between NCC and key stakeholders.”
On his part, Executive Vice Chairman NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, disclosed that the primary objectives of the framework include, promoting a unified and resilient cybersecurity framework across the communications industry, enhancing the protection of telecommunications infrastructure from cyber-attacks; safeguarding consumers’ data and trust in digital service.
Other objectives are ensuring alignment with the national cyber strategies, building sector-wide competence and capacities, and identifying and mitigating cyber risk in the industry.
