To combat pollution in waterways and ports, APM Terminals Apapa has embarked on an innovative recycling initiative, focusing on the reuse of used lubricants and the repurposing of discarded Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as boiler suits and reflective jackets.
This initiative, launched in collaboration with Kevron Consulting to mark the International Day of Zero Waste on March 30, underscores the terminal’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the mitigation of environmental degradation.
The Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, Steen Knudsen, during the unveiling of this partnership, pointed out the alignment of this project with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy of the AP-Moller Maersk Group.
He said the conglomerate’s ambitious goal to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 is partially hinged on reducing the solid waste footprint that significantly contributes to these emissions.
Knudsen emphasised the importance of sustainable consumption and operational practices while assuring that the company will continue to identify areas for continuous improvement and opportunities to promote sustainable patterns in its consumption and operations through the recycling of waste.
According to him, it is crucial to partner with companies that have expertise in different areas to complement the terminal’s efforts, ensuring that together, they will minimise the environmental footprint of their businesses.
The Health and Safety Manager at the terminal, Felix Ugwuagbo, highlighted the critical aspect of this initiative such as the careful monitoring and disposal of used lubricants to prevent them from exacerbating environmental degradation.
He said this careful approach ensures that the used lubricants do not clog waterways or contribute to air pollution through improper use in transportation.
