Alexis Mac Allister scored a second-half leveller from the penalty spot as Liverpool and title rivals, Manchester City, played out an absorbing draw at Anfield.

Mac Allister buried his penalty in the 50th minute after City keeper Ederson had fouled Reds’ Darwin Nunez.

John Stones had given Manchester City the lead in the 23rd minute when he swept in Kevin de Bruyne’s corner.

City’s Phil Foden struck the bar and Jeremy Doku hit the post late on.

The draw meant Arsenal stayed top of the Premier League, level on points with second-placed Liverpool, with City a point behind in third.

Earlier, Tottenham boosted their hopes of a top-four Premier League finish with an emphatic victory over 10-man Aston Villa at Villa Park.

In an encounter billed as pivotal in the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League, early second-half goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson set Spurs on their way.

And a seemingly leg-weary Villa side, who played at Ajax on Thursday evening, rarely looked capable of clawing their way back into the contest once Captain John McGinn was dismissed for a reckless tackle on visiting left-back Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute.

With Spurs in complete control in the closing stages, stoppage-time goals from Son Heung-min and Timo Werner only served to rub salt into Villa’s wounds.

The hosts remain fourth in the table but are now only two points above Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, who have a game in hand.

In other games, Burnley threw away a 2-0 lead in East London to miss the chance of beating West Ham for their first away win.

David Datro Fofana and a Konstantinos Mavropanos’s own goal before half-time gave Burnley a 2-0 lead, but second-half goals by Lucas Paqueta and Danny Ings ensured that West Ham got a share of the spoils.

Brighton had earlier beaten Nottingham Forest 1-0 to keep the Clarets in mid-table, while Forest dropped to the 17th position.
