Destroy property, set vehicles ablaze
An unidentified number of political thugs celebrating the victory of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) in the just-concluded governorship election, yesterday, attacked and ransacked the headquarters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano.
The thugs launched the attack on the APC secretariat along Maiduguri Road in the metropolis after the declaration of Abba Kabir Yusuf by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as winner of the election.
Some of the property destroyed during the mayhem were vehicles belonging to a famous local musician, Dauda Kahutu Rarara, which were set ablaze, as well as and his house destroyed in the process.
Some of the rampaging youths, who took over most of the streets in Kano, also set ablaze a house and buses along Zoo Road, which also belong to the popular Hausa singer.
However, Kano State Commissioner of Police (CP), Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, warned residents of the state to be mindful of how they to celebrate election victory, urging them to obey the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by Kano State Government.
“We urge the good people of the state to abide by the dusk-to-dawn curfew, as the police and other law enforcement officials are on the trail of criminally-minded people, who are out to attack innocent people and loot property.
“The long-awaited 2023 general elections in Nigeria have come and gone. The security concern is now focusing on the way people celebrate the election victory.
“It is important to note that celebrations should always be respectful and mindful of the fact that the people celebrating are inclusive of all people, regardless of political beliefs, religion or culture,” he said.
“It is on the foregoing that the police command is calling on the good people of the state to respect the rules and regulations regarding gatherings and celebrations of election victories.
“Commonly, some may choose to hold rallies, parties and Walimat and any other events to show their excitement and enthusiasm, and in some instances, traditional festivals, such as Durbar.
“The Command wishes to reiterate that a better way to celebrate election victory is for the celebrants to avoid the use of violence or vandalism but should instead always engage in peaceful and non-destructive conduct,” the CP further said.
