Two die, 15 rescued in Lagos boat mishap

Two people died yesterday, when a boat going to Ikorodu from Sandfill capsized at Power Line, Ikoyi-Link Bridge, Ikoyi, Lagos.


The Guardian learnt that the boat was conveying 17 passengers when it rammed into a high tension pole flooded by water and capsized.

Confirming the development, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency responded to distress calls, and upon arrival at the scene, discovered that a boat conveying 17 passengers from Sandfill, heading to Ikorodu, had capsized at the aforementioned location.


He said: “Unfortunately, two adults lost their lives (a male and a female) and 15 passengers were unharmed. The body of an adult female was retrieved from the water and subsequently transported from the incident scene to the head office of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) at Falomo.

The adult female’s remains have been bagged and await the arrival of State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit officials. A search for the body of the adult male is ongoing.”

He added that responders at the scene included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Waterways Authority and the Nigeria Police.
