Gunmen suspected to be cultists struck in Rivers State on Tuesday evening and shot six persons.

The attackers invaded Ikem community, in Etche, Etche Local Council, amid heavy gunfire.

Information was sketchy as at press time but The Guardian learnt that two people were feared dead, while four others are in critical condition.

A source in the community, who pleaded anonymity, said the cultists operated freely for over two hours, despite the presence of a police division 10 minutes from the community.

The source said: “My community is on fire. Cultists have invaded the place. Six persons were shot and two are in critical condition.”

Reacting, spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the District Police Officer (DPO) in the area has mobilised to the scene.

She said after the DPO’s visit, the police would make known a report of their preliminary investigation.
