The management of the University of Lagos, in partnership with the United States of America, yesterday, agreed to open a ‘Window on America’ hub on campus, as part of efforts to improve the relationship between Nigeria and the U.S.

Speaking on the groundbreaking agreement, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Lee Satterfield, said the centre will be open to all, and will offer information about studying in the U.S.

She added that it will also offer opportunities to participate in workforce development training, while experiencing the American culture, as well as have access to fast and free internet to university students and faculty.

Satterfield said that the hub is an important part of their partnership with the university, saying that it has been a strategic educational partner to the U.S., and has produced dozens of Nigerian Fulbright alumni

She also praised the university for being a reciprocal host that has welcomed over 30 U.S. Fulbright scholars over the years.
She revealed that the educational partnership both countries enjoy has seen over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students from Nigeria studying in the U.S. last year alone.

Also announcing that the U.S. is building on its partnership with Nigeria through the Fulbright Programme and the Mandela Washington Fellowship, she said that new opportunities are now open for Nigerians to expand further into the creative and technology industries.

Stressing that Nigeria’s creative industry has really grown in the last few years, becoming a force to be reckoned with in not just Africa, but all over the world, she added that the U.S. government is supporting Nigeria’s creative industries, because they offer economic opportunities for millions of people from Hollywood to Nollywood.
