I will reject slot if zoned to my area, Nwobodo insists
Representative of Enugu East Senatorial District, Chimaroke Nnamani, yesterday, has declared that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has the prerogative to choose his successor in 2023 without challenges.

In a statement made available to The Guardian in Abuja, Nnamani backed the precedent for an incumbent governor of the state to determine his successor, which he said has been the norm since 1999.

His words: “We have a tradition in Enugu State politics. The governor is the leader who directs affairs. He will determine who succeeds him without compromising the electoral process and whomever he chooses will be the next governor.

“I have absolute loyalty and respect for the governor, who is also the leader of the Ebeano political family. He has demonstrated capacity and leadership. We are waiting for him to lead the way to go in 2023 and we shall follow.”

He said Enugu ranked among the few states in the country that enjoy political harmony for respecting zoning or rotation of key political offices among the three senatorial districts, especially the governorship slot since 1999.

Nnamani, who is from Enugu East, governed the state from 1999 to 2007. Sullivan Chime from Enugu West took over from 2007 to 2015, while Ugwuanyi from Enugu North will complete the cycle in 2023 and it is expected that the governorship slot will return to Enugu East in 2023.

He said he was excited over the political development in the state in which several Enugu indigenes indicate interest in the politics of the state and prayed that the best among them will emerge governor in 2023.
