UMC reaffirms autonomy amid controversies on same-sex marriage

United Methodist Church (UMC) in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to regional autonomy amid swirling controversies on a shift in same-sex marriage.

In a world press conference in Jalingo, Taraba State, yesterday, the church’s leadership debunked claims on the global general conference’s alleged stance on same-sex marriage.

Led by Rev. Ande Emmanuel, Head of Delegation for the Southern Nigeria Annual Conference, the leadership reiterated the church’s stance and urged members to disregard any call for schism.

Refuting rumours of a global shift towards same-sex marriage purportedly decided at the recent General Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, they clarified that no such endorsement occurred.

Emmanuel emphasised UMC’s dedication to its core principles and the concept of worldwide regionalisation.

He explained that the proposed structural change aims to address global diversity and regional differences in theology and practice, including contentious issues like human sexuality.

Despite claims by separatist factions, Emmanuel stated that the General Conference did not endorse same-sex marriage and denounced misinformation aimed at dividing the church.

He highlighted the adoption of the worldwide regionalisation plan as a constructive step towards resolving longstanding conflicts, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ inclusion in the church’s life and ministry, mainly in America and Europe.

Amid these challenges, the UMC in Nigeria, he said, remains resolute in upholding its values and autonomy.
