UN, media outfit seek better reportage of women issues

United Nations and St. Ives Communication known as (Women Radio), at the weekend, urged media establishments to give women adequate coverage, noting that the gender is under-reported despite its “huge contribution” to nation-building.

Speaking in Abakaliki during a two-day media training, organised by Women Radio with support from the United Nations Women and the Government of Canada, Communication Officer, Women Radio, Elizabeth Aboh, said the essence of the programme was to bridge existing gap of alleged non-inclusiveness of women in media reportage.

She noted that the event was to train media stakeholders in Ebonyi as part of efforts to improve balanced reportage on gender issues and responsive reporting.

Aboh observed that women in politics and leaders were not receiving adequate media coverage as their male counterparts across states, stressing the need to always portray women in a positive way in the daily reports.

While urging women not to be discouraged in taking their rightful position in the society, Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, a facilitator, who spoke on “The RUSH Model and 50:50 Strategy: An Inclusive, Responsive and Balanced Reporting,” highlighted importance of fair and balanced reportage of women in politics.

Atuonwu, who is also Zonal Manager of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Enugu zone, urged adoption of the RUSH model, which means, “Report Until Something Happened” by the media to ensure that issues about female are well reported during and after the general elections.
