UNIBEN violence: Akpata visits victim, advocates peaceful discourse

S’South APC vows to take back Edo in guber election
The Edo State Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the September 21 gubernatorial election, Olumide Akpata, yesterday, visited Dr. Presley Osemwegie, who was injured when students attacked the hall when the university of Benin (UNIBEN) Staff Club hosted the LP candidate on April 12.

Recall that Akpata, while on an interactive session, was violently interrupted by the Students Union Government (SUG) executive, which caused a crisis within the school premises. The lecturer sustained injuries and later received treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Benin. Akpata also debunked allegations that his security personnel shot a student of the institution, insisting that nothing like that happened. He accused a top government official of masterminding the attack.

Akpata said: “I made it a priority to visit the UNIBEN lecturer who was injured in a senseless act of violence at the UNIBEN Staff Club, Dr. Presley Osemwegie.

“Hearing his firsthand account of the gory details was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. As I interacted with him and his family, offering prayers for his recovery, I was reminded of the profound impact such incidents have on individuals and their loved ones.

“It is a stark reminder that we must work tirelessly to promote peace, respect and understanding. “While the investigation continues, I remain committed to cooperating fully and supporting efforts towards a just and equitable resolution. This unfortunate incident has only strengthened my resolve to advocate peaceful discourse and open communication, where differences are resolved through constructive dialogue, not violence.”

MEANWHILE, the executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South South have issued a warning signal to other political parties in Edo State, threatening to take back power in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The APC South South Zonal leaders gave the warning, at the weekend, when they convened in Calabar to discuss crucial political issues bothering the zone.

The meeting, which was also attended by chairmen from various states in the zone, was presided over by the South South Zonal Leader, the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Out.

He said that the meeting was a success with fruitful discussions, which included their agreement to work for the unity of the party across the South South states.
