UNILAG alumni offer scholarships to FCT students

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association, FCT Branch, has awarded scholarships to brilliant but indigent students of public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The ceremony was attended by President of the association, Dr Ifeoluwa Oyedele, while the FCT administration was represented by the secretary, Dr Danlami Hayyo.

Presenting the N2.5 million scholarship award to beneficiaries, the branch chairman, Aliu Akoshile said the 24 students were selected from the six area councils based on a rigorous screening process.

Akoshile, who disclosed that members have launched a N10 million scholarship endowment, said the award covers tuition for six terms as well as West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration for the students.

While expressing appreciation to alumni members who have contributed to the endowment fund, he said the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi, singlehandedly offered N5 million support.

The Chairman, who urged the students to remain focused and maintain high academic standards, also enjoined to eschew all forms of vices in their communities.

Akoshile encouraged the female students in particular not to regard gender as an inhibition, saying they have a role model in UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who has risen to the zenith of her professional career.
