University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo town, Ondo State

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo town, Ondo State, has urged the 587 students admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session to adhere to regulations guiding their studentship at the institution.

With the students admitted into the university’s nine faculties, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, urged the new students to fully engage in their academic pursuits while actively contributing to the university’s intellectual community.

Fatusi, who stated this during the oath-taking ceremony held at the Odo-Sida campus of the university, congratulated the students for successfully scaling the rigorous but fair hurdles of admission into the institution.

He said: “Today’s number is about 25% more than what we admitted last year; we have continued to make steady progress at the university.

“The new increase will take place in the next admission. One of the exciting news is that four new courses were introduced as new students were admitted; these include: Audiology. This course is important because there is no medical school in the country today that is training people in Audiology.

“As people grow older, they are going to have problems with hearing, as well as young people who use all kinds of earpieces. Some young children are born with deformities that need audiology in our society. We are glad that we have started that and the first set of students of audiology in this country.

“Another one is Bio-Sciences and Bio-Technology; they are the people you can look forward to helping Nigeria develop things like vaccines in the future.

“Also, in medical physics, they are the ones to develop the equipment we use. Medicinal chemists are the people to develop drugs and to help transform some of the modern herbs into modern drugs,” he explained.

Fatusi, in his seven-point agenda, which he captures with “Degree of Excellence,”  says the students must have the gifts of competence, character,  confidence, connection, contribution, creativity, and the gift of cultivating godliness in the course of study.

He noted that the school is not about to read and pass the exam but to develop itself to be fit for employment in the future.

The VC further said that “our vision is to produce people who are excellent and fit for society. He told them to speak against anyone who can destroy the academic calendar, and they should make sure creativity is their landmark.

Fatusi charged them to be diligent in their academic pursuit and also adhere strictly to the university’s laid-down rules and regulations so that they do not dislike the unique opportunities UNIMED offers, and they should also work towards the seven-point agenda given to them at the matriculation ceremony.
