UNN moves to save Igbo language, culture from extinction

UNN, Nsukka
The Centre for Igbo Studies, University Of Nigeria, Nsukka, (CIS-UNN) has taken a bold step towards saving Igbo language, culture and tradition from going into extinction.

This is as the institution moves to host scholars and practitioners from various parts of the world to share insights, findings and innovations on the Igbo language and culture project in Nsukka on Friday.

At a press briefing in Enugu, yesterday, to announce the event, tagged, ‘Second World Igbo Conference,’ Director, Centre for Igbo Studies, Prof. Chris Uchenna Agbedo, disclosed that the conference would explore various aspects of Igbo culture, language, heritage and socio-economic development.

While calling on Igbo parents to bring up their children in their mother tongue and culture, Agbedo said that part of the challenge the Igbo language had faced was an inclination to Western culture by Igbo sons and daughters, He said: “This conference, therefore, provides a dynamic platform for scholars, cultural practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue on issues pertinent to Igbo language, culture and identity.

“At the core of the conference lies a bountiful harvest of research presentations and panel discussions, showcasing the latest advancements in Igbo studies and culture preservation efforts. Through interactive workshops, capacity building sessions, and community engagement activities, the conference would empower participants with the knowledge skills and resources needed to actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of Igbo language and culture.”
