Value of books, social media in nation-building, by Ehusani

Notable cleric and social commentator, Rev. Fr. George Ehusani, has called for a return to edifying reading culture and optimal use of the social media for personal empowerment and social development of the country.

The Catholic priest, who is Executive Director of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, Abuja, made this known at Lux Terra’s maiden Book Festival in Abuja.

Decrying the country’s poor reading culture as “pathetic,” he stressed the importance of optimal use of the social media beyond entertainment.

His words: “We have not handled, very well, the entrance of the social media into the society. A lot of our people today are using only the entertainment angle. If 90 per cent of our use of the social media is for entertainment, then we are not being educated.”

On the benefits of books, Ehusani stated that books are so important that “you don’t grow a human being without reading.”
Highpoint of the event was the unveiling of the seven new publications of Fr. Ehusani, namely The Gospel Challenge: 30 Years of Application of Christian Social Teaching in the Nigerian Context, Nigeria: More Years Eaten by the Locusts, Between Faith and Social Activism, Conversion to Christ, Growing in Christ, Sunday Homilies (Year A) and Sunday Homilies (Year C).
