VC of GUU cautions students against vices, gambling, others

• No expiry date for voter cards, Abia REC declares
Vice Chancellor of the Gregory University, Uturu (GUU) in Abia State, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe, has urged students of the university to eschew vices such as gambling, substance abuse and cultism, among others.

He enjoined them to remain focused and abide by the guiding principles of learning and character in tertiary education, stressing that impressive performance in academics can guarantee a better foundation for the future.

Uwakwe stated this while addressing 380 new students comprising undergraduates and post-graduates during the institution’s matriculation ceremony in Uturu at the weekend.  Virtual Reality

He recalled that the GUU, whose motto is: Knowledge for Tomorrow, commenced in 2012 with less than 78 pioneer students and three colleges, but now has over 2,000 students, 51 courses in 10 colleges fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Also speaking at the matriculation ceremony, Abia State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Joseph Iloh, urged students and the university community, who have attained 18 years and above, to register and obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) for the 2023 general elections.

Iloh, who was represented by the Public Affairs and Information Assistant Director of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bamidele Oyedele, said the process of voter registration and issuance of PVCs has been made easier hence prospective voters could register online through the INEC portal from their homes.  Virtual Reality

He refuted insinuations in some quarters that PVCs have expiry dates, stressing that it is not true and that those who need to change some information in their registration were free to do so.

He urged them to visit the INEC portal and listed change of names like women after marriage, correction of misspelt names as some of the reasons that could necessitate such changes.
