Reprieve has come the way of victims of the fire incident, which gutted 22 apartments at 19 Amusa Street, Abule Oja, Yaba, Lagos, on Monday, February 26, 2024.

This was as a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Moshood Olanrewaju Oshun; member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rasheed Adebola Shabi; and the Chairman, Yaba Local Council, Kayode Omiyale, jointly donated N2.5 million to the victims.

The disbursement, held at 18 Abudu Street, Abule Oja, yesterday, was witnessed by the Chairman, Abule Oja Community Development Association (CDA), Otunbade Nurudeen, religious leaders, and community elders.

Each victim received N113,600 cash.

Recall that 22 occupants were affected by the fire, which destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

A member of Abule Oja CDA, Olasunkanmi Ameen, said the money was divided into 22, being the number of the victims, to arrive at N113,600 per person.

“We asked them to gather here today and gave everyone one of them N113,600. We are here to witness this important occasion, where all the victims benefit from the little the community can do to assist them.

“We have given about 16 of them. The remaining six will come later to collect theirs.’’ because they probably went to work or something.”

Ameen explained: “It is not from Lagos State. We wrote a letter to Lagos State. We have not received anything from them. But this is from our members from the Federal House of Representatives, state Assembly, and council chairman.”

One of the beneficiaries, Tobias Ossai, said: “We are so happy with them for encouraging us. They called for people who were involved in the fire accident to give us money. They shared the money for all the 22 people, and each person present got N113,600 today. May God continue to bless them abundantly.”

Also, the caretaker, David Obalade, who represented the landlord, thanked the donors for the gesture and prayed that God would give them long life and prosperity.

He, nevertheless, pleaded for further assistance from the government.

One of the donors, Shabi, said the gesture was out of care for the immediate needs of the victims, adding: “I do not pray for such to happen again. I have told them already to write, send the pictures and the videos with a cover letter. I will follow up. I will ensure that the state government gives them something.”
