The Oyo State Police Command has invited a complainant, Mr. Ganiyu Omirinde for interrogation.
According to the police, Omirinde, a youth leader from Ayete in an interview published in a newspaper accused police of working with Iskilu Wakili. Wakili is a suspect who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the killings, kidnappings and attacks on innocent citizens in Ibarapa area of the state.
The invitation was sequel to the allegations the complainant leveled against men of the State Police command over the activities of Wakili.
It would be recalled that the Police had earlier invited members of the public to supply them with evidence that can aid the prosecution of the suspect.
Omirinde alleged that complainants are often detained and bailed with #50,000.00 which has resulted in residents’ refusal to further lodge complaints on any Fulani/herders case in the area. The State Police command has however, said that it has invited the complainant for further information on his allegations against the police.
This was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, the state capital, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police had directed that Ganiyu Omirinde be invited to authenticate his views as reflected in the news publication. “It was gathered that though the interview was conducted, the publication made about him in that regard was an absolute misrepresentation.
“On the strength of the above, the CP wishes to state emphatically that the publication is a misrepresented news that has no base or backing, hence, the Command is seeking a better collaboration with the press and the general public in the propagation of accurate information.
“While the Command would continue to put in place security apparatus to further strengthen the security architecture and promote relative peace being enjoyed in the state, the CP urges all and sundry to remain law-abiding citizens in the state, in addition to supporting the Police with credible and timely information as the best is being done in nipping crime in the bud and bringing insecurity to the barest minimum.
