The Federal Character Commission (FCC), has said that the commission was not in charge of recruitment for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as generally believed by Nigerians.
It also restated commitment to the mandate that established the commission by section 14 (3) of the 1999 Nigerian constitution (as amended), to strengthen unity and fairness in Nigeria
Chairman of the Commission, Dr Muheeba Dankaka, who disclosed this in Abuja during the third-year anniversary celebration of the Board, noted that FCC was established to ensure equitable distribution of positions and resources in the country.
It would recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020 appointed Muheeda Dankaka as the Chairperson of the Federal Character Commission and 37 other members of the board as commissioners.
Dankaka said: “We are not in charge of recruitment but this process of advertising will make it easier for unemployed youths to get employed. For the youths that people call unemployed, I pray that God will make you employed. I promise you that when it comes to employment, we will make sure that they advertise in the newspapers so that you can see and apply.”
In his remarks, Commissioner representing Niger State, Hon. Suleiman Barau, advocated for collaboration with the staff and other stakeholders to achieve the commission’s mandate.
He said: “I am appealing to all of us including the commissioners and directors to support the chairman to enable the commission to achieve its mandate.”
Also, the commissioner representing Bayelsa State, Hon. Tonye Okio, explained that the commission was ensuring equitable distribution of social amenities and infrastructure across regions.
He said: “We are ensuring that positions for jobs are advertised especially for those who have met those criteria. We are ensuring that the character balancing index is appropriately implemented to ensure that one state doesn’t get more than other states.”
