We will fight crimes with regional strength – Ekiti Speaker

Adeoye Aribasoye

The Ekiti Speaker, Mr. Adeoye Aribasoye, says that the state will collaborate solidly with other South-Western states in the fight against criminal elements and sponsors of tragic crimes.

Aribasoye said this on Friday in Ado-Ekiti during an emergency plenary convened by the Ekiti House of Assembly, following the murder of two monarchs and abduction of school children in the state.

The speaker also assured the residents of the state that all workable possibilities would be explored to rescue the abductees and punish the culprits.
He urged security agencies in the state to go beyond carrying out comprehensive investigations into the incessant crimes in flashpoints, to also ensuring the arrest of perpetrators of the twin attack of Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

“Arrest of perpetrators of these dastardly crimes will make a loud statement that will douse fear and give those grieving a sense of consolation.
“We are displeased that killing, maiming, kidnapping and wanton destruction of lives and property by unauthorised men in possession of sophisticated arms have become a common experience in recent times in Nigeria,” he said.

Aribasoye reiterated key resolutions of the house of assembly, which included a call for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to speedily commence operations in Ekiti State. He said that the NAF would lead the operations with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering.
Other resolutions highlighted by the speaker are the call for devolution of power to states to enable multilevel policing and review of the Security Trust Fund Law of Ekiti to meet current realities.

The speaker also highlighted the need for military patrol and Police outposts along the border communities and regular combing of Ekiti forests.
He reiterated the need for the state government to set up a dedicated agency to oversee forests within the state.

In a live interaction on another forum, Aribasoye disagreed with the notion that there are no adequate laws to tackle dastardly crimes in the country.
He insisted that the political will for law implementation was what needed to be exhibited without reservations.

The speaker also emphasised that local and regional security outfits like Amotekun network should be licensed to carry arms that would not be substandard to what criminals possessed.
