We’ll put smile on your face, weightlifters assure Nigerians as event begins

After suffering defeats in table tennis and football events, Team Nigeria will today begin its quest for medals in the Weightlifting event at the 2024 Africa Games.

Nigeria’s squad made up of 12 lifters, including six female and six male, will begin their competition with two women and a man featuring in different categories.

In the opening competition, which starts with 45kg women category, Morufat Folarin will compete by 11.00am, while 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye, will compete in the 55kg category by 5pm. Also, King Kalu, who is featuring in 55kg men category, will be in action today.

At the 2019 edition of the African Games, Team Nigeria finished second behind Egypt in the Weightlifting event with 50 medals made up of 16 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze.

Nigerian lifters are sure of putting a better performance in this year’s African Games in Ghana than the outing four years ago in Rabat, Morocco. 2019 African Games gold medallist in -59kg category, Rafiatu Lawal, 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye as well as Edidiong Umoafia, who is making his debut are looking forward to win medals for Nigeria medals in Accra.The Weightlifting event, which is holding at the University of Ghana, Legon, started yesterday, Friday, and will last till March 15, 2024.
