We’ll unravel persons behind political violence in Kano, panel vows

Chairman, Kano State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Political Violence and Cases of Missing Persons, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, has vowed to unravel those behind political killings and missing children in the state.

She noted that despite the commitment to discharge the task given to it by the state government, the commission would not victimise any individual or group.

Yusuf gave the notice during the panel’s inaugural sitting at the High Court of Justice Complex, Miller Road, where he pledged to deliver diligently and in fairness.

The judge further extended an invitation to individuals, groups, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as well as victims of political violence and missing persons to submit letters or petitions to the commission to aid its work.

“I would also like to further assure the people of Kano that this commission will discharge its assigned mandates diligently, fairly, dispassionately and without fear or ill will. The essence of the commission is to find out the causes and factors that instigate political violence in the state.”

“Similarly, the commission is mandated to investigate the rampant cases of missing persons and to recommend enduring solutions to the two issues. I assure the public that the commission is there to serve them, that their petitions would be looked into and, where necessary, would be called upon to give oral evidence,” he said.

The high Court Justice said the commission’s terms of reference include finding the root of the political and other forms of violence in Kano; identifying areas where violence associated with the 2015, 2019 and 2023 general elections in Kano, and identifying sponsors and perpetrators of political and other forms of violence during and in-between elections in the state.

She appealed to the media to discharge their duties with utmost professionalism, to help the commission deliver on its mandates.
