Nigerian journalist and the publisher/editor-in-chief of Premium Times, Dapo Olorunyomi, has stressed the crucial role of data in modern journalism.

He noted the importance of data literacy in journalism, distinguishing between organic data such as words, sounds, and graphics, and harnessing data to provide analysis, insights, and visualisation.

Olorunyomi, while speaking in Abuja at the launch of the Dataphyte hub and the unveiling of a theatre in his honour on Wednesday, said that data is the backbone of journalism, essential for storytelling, reporting, and financing.

He said: “Data is central to the project of journalism of the modern time. All the stories that we do, we need to recreate, we need to use to achieve purpose. The whole purpose of writing, reporting and coverage is all about data.

“Indeed, the reception of our messages is always about data, which above all, also, the whole infrastructure of how we put together the financing of journalism is all about data. So, in a nutshell, the epicentre of journalism, really, is all about data.”

In his remarks, African Country Director, MacArthur Foundation, Dr Kole Shettima, said: “Bringing data is one way of inclusive form of communication because there are people who may not be able to read things, but they can see data and understand it.

“But, more importantly, I think that data also helps to aggregate information that probably would take one a very long time to understand.”

Also speaking, the founder and publisher of Dataphyte, Joshua Olufemi, said that data provides the seed for development and growth.

Olufemi said: “Data is the seed for insight. It is a seed for intelligence. It is the seed for reforms, change, development, and every need. if we’re able to have the right data, to help you interpret, why you made the decisions you made, what decisions you made, why the things that are happening around us are happening.

“I think that data just provides a seed of insight, knowledge and intelligence for livelihood for development for growth as a whole.”

The Board Chair of Dataphyte Foundation, Yop Rwang Pam, noted that the foundation aims to harness data for social good.

She said: “We believe that leveraging on the power of data, the country can drive transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making across various sectors.

“We are confident that Dataphyte will serve as a beacon of innovation and integrity, leading the charge in using data to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

“One of the cornerstones of Dataphyte’s mission is to create a dynamic hub for young people. In today’s rapidly evolving world, it is crucial to empower our youth with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate and shape the future.”
