Why I haven’t received salary as Anambra governor in two years – Soludo

Anambra State governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo

Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has revealed that he has yet to receive a salary for two years since assuming office as the Governor of Anambra State.

Soludo made this disclosure on Sunday at an event to celebrate two years of his administration in Awka, the state capital.

The governor said he decided to take this step to help Anambra State while also cutting costs and not borrowing for the last two years.

He added that he believes cutting waste and the cost of governance will help his administration to direct resources to the development of Anambra State.

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said this will also help his government to give more priority to the things that are important to the people Anambra.

According to Soludo, his wife does not even have an official car in her capacity as the first lady of Anambra State, and she still drives his cars.

“Any governor that comes floods you with offers for borrowing and so on and so forth, but we decided for the first two years to demonstrate something which is the capacity to do more with less,” said Soludo.

“And so far as has been said, for two years, despite receiving about 25 per cent in real terms or in dollar terms of what was in the past, we have chosen deliberately not to borrow.

“I have been asked severally; ‘how do you do without borrowing and with the difficult circumstances?’ And my answer is that we are doing so because we are executing the most austere measure government ever.

“As I speak to you, I am not taking any salary, I am not paid any salary by Anambra State government. Even the First Lady of Anambra doesn’t have any official car, she still drives my personal vehicles.”
