Women decry hindrances to participation in national development

Diamond Nebechukwu

Women have lamented that, despite their significant contributions in the country’s development, they continue to face numerous factors that hinder their full participation in the economic, political and social spheres.

Director of Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies, (AAIPSDS), Dr Diamond Nebechukwu, made the submission during the commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD), organised by AAIPSDS, in collaboration with National Council on Women Societies (NCWS), Niger State chapter.

Theme of the event held in Minna, Niger State is ‘Inspiring the Inclusion of Women in National Development: Barriers, Concerns and Strategies’.

According to Nebechukwu, it is imperative for women to address all the issues confronting them, which bordered on gender-based discrimination, lack of economic opportunities as well as cultural biases that perpetuated gender inequality.

She said: “Today, we gather here to acknowledge these challenges and to find strategies to overcome them.”

Nebechukwu suggested that women should be recognised for their resilience and strength.
