Workers decry neglect of Abia newspapers as new management lauds move for revitalisation

Alex Otti

Workers of Abia Newspapers and Publishing Corporation, the publisher of The National Ambassador, have decried its neglect by past state administrations, pledging to work with the new management to reposition the newspaper, transforming it into a national daily.

They also lauded the move by Governor Alex Otti to revitalise the state owned newspaper, which was established by the first elected civilian governor of the state, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, in 1991.

Otti had, a few days ago, approved the appointment of a veteran journalist, Jones Nnanna Ike, as the General Manager of the print media house.

The newspaper had, over the years, been published irregularly, and not widely circulated in the country.

At a maiden meeting he held with workers, yesterday, Ike charged them to demonstrate professionalism to compete with other national dailies. He said: “We must imbibe and propagate ideals of journalism, and justify the state government’s objective of establishing it in line with the governor’s commitment to clear all the mess, which the state was plunged into by past administrations.”
