World Cancer Day: Expert tasks govt on free mammogram programme for early detection

The Federal Government has been urged to invest in mammogram programme to help Nigerians access regular check-ups for early detection of cancer

A medical expert, Dr. Olaoluwa Abolade, gave the advice, yesterday, while enlightening students on cancer during an event by Jacaranda Cancer Centre at IjemoTitun High School, Abeokuta, to commemorate this year’s World Cancer Day celebration.

According to Abolade is crucial for government to invest in programmes that will ensure the well being of their citizens, including sensitisation activities to let the people know that cancer is treatable and preventable if the right step is taken.

The medical expert encouraged the students and teachers to take their health seriously, urging them to be cautious and engage in practices that will make them come down to cancer generally.

She said: “The purpose of this awareness programme is to let the students be aware about cancer, how to do self-breast examination and how to prevent cancer generally. When it comes to good hygiene and feeding style, there is a need to eat more fruits, vegetables and exercise. Don’t wait until you get to that middle age of 40 and above because we understand that a good diet can help to prevent quite a number of diseases.

“Majorly, we are just encouraging the students and teachers to engage in health practices that will help prevent cancer generally. Early detection helps with the diagnosis and even the progression of the cancer disease.”
