The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), yesterday, faulted the meeting of the South-West governors with Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), saying that it fell short of people’s expectations, as the victims of herders’ criminal activities were not represented.
The YCE said the resolution from the meeting did not represent the general wishes of Yoruba people who are currently under the yoke of the killer-herdsmen.
The elders, in a statement signed by their Secretary-General, Dr. Kunle Olajide and made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, said the representatives of Yoruba people ought to have been invited to give the meeting credence.
It noted that the South-West governors were not at the meeting to represent the region as they were minorities and were conveners representing the interest of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, which is the arbitrator of the dispute.
The council, which condemned the alleged deafening silence of the governors on the series of threats by the Miyetti Allah to the people of the region, said there was no free forest in the South-West to accommodate criminals.
MEANWHILE, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams, has commended the South-West governors for raising their voices against night and under-aged grazing across the region.
He also lauded the governors for the agreement reached with the herders during their meeting in Ondo State, describing the decision as a swift response to the growing spate of insecurity across Yorubaland.
In a statement yesterday, Adams said: “The effort of the governors was a step in the right direction and an attempt to douse the tension and also proffer lasting solutions to the protracted problems of insecurity in South-West.
“I commend the governors on the new development. It was a welcome development. The underlying motive is to reduce the growing tension in the region. But in solving these problems, we need to support the South-West Security Network, code-named Operation Amotekun.”
He, however, condemned those behind the fire incident at Sunday Igboho’s house in Ibadan and urged the Federal Government to unravel those behind the incident, saying that it was an attempt to frustrate the young man.
