Yoruba youths frown at obnoxious provisions in Electoral Law

The Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide has frowned at a section of the Electoral Act, which it termed as “obnoxious provisions”.

President of Yoruba Youths, Aare Oladotun Hassan, who spoke, yesterday, in Abuja, implored President Buhari to apply to the National Assembly to strike out same provisions for their inconsistency with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended).

Hassan said the 2022 Act would impact greatly on the 2023 elections, based on provisions in ratifying the electronic transmission of votes and results to a central portal.

He further said the new law would save the nation of the monumental embarrassment of forged and alterations of election results, ballot box snatching by armed thugs, among others.

He said: “The Electoral Act is the guiding laws for INEC to use for the conduct and management of electoral processes and most importantly, the 2023 general elections.

“We hope this will go a long way to tackle electoral malpractices. We implore politicians to play by the rules, and electorates to be guided accordingly.

Meanwhile, Abuja-based Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have commended the president for signing the bill.

They said the event “marked a huge milestone in Nigerian’s quest to consolidate electoral democracy…”

“The new Electoral Act, 2022, which incorporates innovative provisions that will enhance credibility of our electoral process, signifies a new era in the history of elections in Nigeria. More importantly, the new Electoral Act symbolises the commitment of Nigerians to remain consistent in the demand for credible, free, inclusive, transparent and fair elections.

“We, as civil society commend the President for fulfilling his promise of assenting to the Electoral Bill. ”
