‘You can’t stop farming’, CP assures as gunmen go berserk in Enugu communities

The Police in Enugu State have assured Adani community, Uzo Uwani Local Council of maximum protection, asking them not to abandon their farm lands over renewed killings in the area.

Tension had on Sunday enveloped the community following the killing of two brothers, Ogbonna Fidelis Anene, 33, and Ogbonna John Onyeka, 25, who were on their way home from farm by unknown persons. Sources said the young men were found by villagers in the pool of their blood.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, who led a team of police officers to the community, expressed sadness over the ugly incident and assured them that a crack squad has been sent after the perpetrators.

He assured that those found culpable would be made to face the law.

“You can’t stop going to farm because it is your means of livelihood, but we are guaranteeing your safety. We shall clamp down on these criminals. Enugu is already too hot for them, but we shall make it even hotter for them going forward. So, I urge you all to take heart and count on us for your ceaseless protections.

“Enugu State under the watchful eyes of Governor Peter Mbah and the Nigeria Police can never allow the perpetrators of this evil act to go scot free.”

The government is displeased with this ugly report and we shall ensure justice for the Ogbonna brothers. That is the governor’s demand and that is the Inspector General of Police’s order,” Uzuegbu said.


The CP asked the natives to go about their lawful businesses, assuring of security agencies’ resolve and determination to secure them both at home and in their farmlands.

He, however, appealed to them to be vigilant and assist security agents with relevant information of any suspicious persons or criminal activities in their environment.

The Town Union President General, Emmanuel Utazi, who spoke in company of Matthew Idu and Vincent Diugwu, expressed delight over the visit of the Commissioner and his team, stating that Adani Community remained very peaceful people, who relate with everyone and has never had any crisis with any community to warrant such murders.

“We are happy the Commissioner of Police is here in person to console us. We shall do exactly as you have said and shall continue our farming activities because we are counting on your assured safety and our governor’s assurances,” Utazi said.


MEANWHILE, the killing of a Catechist of the All Saints Anglican Church Onicha-Ebia Ikem, Chinaza Odumejeogu on Monday, has triggered fears among people of Ikem community in Isi-uzo Local Council of the state.

The Anglican Catechist was reportedly kidnapped in his farm on Monday morning with his son, who escaped with a bullet wound on his leg and is presently receiving treatment in a private hospital.

The Catechist was, however, not lucky as his abductors shot him dead and left him in a bush path towards Benue State. His corpse was picked up by the combined forces of the police, the army and the local vigilante, who chased after his abductors and deposited him in a morgue.

This was followed by the abduction of one John Ede and his daughter in their farm on Monday morning. Another member of the community, Mrs Benedicta Abonyi, who was allegedly abducted from her home, escaped after security agents overpowered her abductors.
